El bueno y el mejor, muestreando peces de pozas intermareales tropicales: una comparación entre el censo visual vs. el método de vaciado

Resumen

Se han aplicado numerosos métodos de muestreo para estudiar los peces en pozas de marea. La información generada para contrastar el desempeño y la idoneidad de estos métodos es limitada, lo cual dificulta la comparación entre estudios. Comparamos el desempeño del método de vaciado y censo visual en 10 pozas de marea para cuantificar la abundancia, riqueza de especies y la estructura de los ensamblajes de peces en sistemas de pozas intermareales considerando las categorías de residencia de los peces, el volumen de las pozas y la rugosidad del sustrato. El muestreo se realizó en 13 ocasiones para el conjunto completo de 10 pozas entre junio y diciembre de 2018. Cada poza fue muestreada utilizando primero el censo visual y luego el vaciado de la misma. Un evento de muestreo fue definido como el proceso de llevar a cabo ambos métodos de muestreo, visual y vaciado de la poza, en una poza. En total, 1,749 individuos de 14 especies fueron detectados con el método de vaciado, mientras que 438 individuos de 8 especies fueron detectados con los censos visuales. El método de vaciado detectó mayores abundancias y riqueza de especies de peces residentes, oportunistas y transitorios en comparación con los censos visuales. La detección de individuos y especies se asoció positivamente con el volumen de las pozas y negativamente con la rugosidad del sustrato para ambos métodos. En 32 eventos de muestreo, el método de vaciado detectó peces donde los censos visuales registraron ausencia de peces (falsos negativos) lo que permitió corregir los registros. Para el método de vaciado, los peces residentes dominaron la comunidad de peces, mientras que, para el método de muestreo del censo visual, los peces residentes y oportunistas contribuyeron de manera similar a la comunidad.
